How to Add Your Business to the UCP Ecosystem

Getting your business into the UCP ecosystem is straightforward. Whether you're a small DTC brand on Shopify or an enterprise retailer on a custom platform, this guide walks you through the process from zero to listed — and explains exactly what you get once you're in.

Step 1: Understand What You're Adding

When you add your business to the UCP ecosystem, you're doing two things:

  1. Creating a UCP endpoint — a standardized API that AI agents can discover and interact with
  2. Getting listed in the UCP Registry — so agents can find you through the centralized directory

For the full technical picture, our complete UCP guide explains the protocol in depth.

Why bother? The data makes a compelling case. Across 560+ tracked agent sessions, UCP-enabled stores see agents reach checkout 47% of the time, with average cart values of $165. The total tracked GMV across our sample exceeds $108,000 — real revenue flowing through UCP endpoints. And this is early days — daily session volumes have grown 10x in the past month alone.

Step 2: Choose Your Implementation Path

Path A: Platform-Native Support (Fastest)

If you're on a platform with built-in UCP support, this is the quickest route:

  • Shopify: Enable in Settings → Sales Channels. Full guide: UCP for Shopify Merchants
  • WooCommerce: Install the WooCommerce UCP Adapter plugin
  • BigCommerce: Enable in Channel Manager → UCP
  • Magento: Install the Magento 2 UCP Module

Time to live: 5-15 minutes

Path B: Third-Party UCP Tools

If your platform doesn't have native support, community-built tools can help you validate and benchmark your UCP endpoint before submitting:

  • UCPChecker — runtime verification, endpoint monitoring, and compliance checking for any platform
  • UCP Playground — interactive benchmarking harness to test your implementation before submitting

Time to live: 30-60 minutes

Path C: Manual Implementation

For full control, implement UCP directly. You'll need:

  1. A JSON manifest at /.well-known/ucp.json
  2. API endpoints for each capability you want to support
  3. Product data in UCP's standard format

Our implementation guide covers this step by step.

Time to live: 1-5 days depending on your capabilities

Step 3: Configure Your Manifest

Your UCP manifest is the entry point for AI agents. At minimum, it should include:

{
  "version": "2026-01-23",
  "merchant": {
    "name": "Your Store Name",
    "domain": "yourstore.com",
    "description": "Brief description of what you sell",
    "logo": "https://yourstore.com/logo.png"
  },
  "capabilities": [
    "dev.ucp.shopping.catalog",
    "dev.ucp.shopping.checkout"
  ],
  "transports": ["mcp"]
}

Capability identifiers use reverse-domain notation — dev.ucp.shopping.* is the namespace for all core shopping capabilities.

Start Small, Expand Later

You don't need to support every capability from day one. Most merchants start with:

  1. dev.ucp.shopping.catalog — let agents search your product catalog
  2. dev.ucp.shopping.checkout — let agents complete purchases on behalf of consumers

Then add over time:

  1. dev.ucp.shopping.fulfillment — expose shipping options for agents to select during checkout
  2. dev.ucp.shopping.discount — let agents apply promo codes programmatically
  3. dev.ucp.shopping.order — let agents check order status post-purchase

The most capable merchants support all five, but even catalog access alone makes your store visible to AI agents.

Step 4: Optimize Your Product Data

AI agents are only as good as the data they receive. Before going live, ensure your products have:

  • Clear, descriptive titles — "Women's Organic Cotton V-Neck T-Shirt - Navy - Size M" is better than "V-Neck Tee"
  • Complete descriptions — materials, dimensions, care instructions, use cases
  • Accurate categorization — map to standard taxonomies where possible
  • Current pricing — including sale prices and currency
  • Real-time inventory — stale availability data frustrates consumers and erodes agent trust
  • Quality images — multiple angles, high resolution

A data-driven insight: agent sessions show that product detail lookups account for only 5.6% of all tool calls. This means agents make most purchase decisions from search results alone. Invest heavily in making your search response data complete — title, price, description, image, availability — so agents don't need a separate detail fetch. Merchants who do this see faster conversion and lower endpoint load.

Step 5: Configure AI Bot Policies

Make sure AI agents can actually reach your endpoint. Check your robots.txt and ensure you're not blocking the major AI crawlers:

  • GPTBot (OpenAI)
  • ClaudeBot (Anthropic)
  • Google-Extended (Google AI)
  • Applebot-Extended (Apple)
  • CCBot (Common Crawl)

See the AI bot-friendly collection for reference implementations.

Step 6: Submit to the UCP Registry

Once your endpoint is live and responding:

  1. Go to ucpregistry.com/submit
  2. Enter your domain
  3. We automatically detect and validate your UCP manifest
  4. Your endpoint gets benchmarked across six dimensions (more on this below)
  5. Once verified, you appear in the merchant directory and are queryable via the Registry API

Verification typically completes within 24 hours.

What Happens During Verification

After your endpoint is detected, the Registry enriches your listing automatically:

  • AI-generated descriptions — an AI model reads your catalog and capabilities to produce a plain-language description of your store for your Registry page and search results
  • Google taxonomy classification — your store is categorized using Google's Product Taxonomy so agents can filter merchants by product category
  • Sample product indexing — a selection of your products is indexed into the Product Discovery catalog, making your inventory visible to cross-merchant agent searches

You don't need to do anything for this to happen. It runs as part of the standard verification pipeline.

Step 7: Claim Your Listing

After your store appears in the Registry, claim ownership to unlock merchant controls:

  1. Go to ucpregistry.com/claim
  2. Enter your domain and business email
  3. Choose a verification method:
    • DNS record — add a TXT record to your domain to prove DNS control
    • Meta tag — add a verification meta tag to your homepage
  4. Complete verification and your listing becomes linked to your account

Claiming your listing lets you update business details, respond to benchmark feedback, and manage your public Registry profile.

Step 8: What You Get After Listing

Once verified and claimed, your listing unlocks several capabilities you can use immediately.

Embeddable Badges

Display your Registry status on your own site with embeddable SVG badges:

<!-- Verified merchant badge -->
<img src="https://ucpregistry.com/badge/yourstore.com.svg" alt="UCP Verified">

<!-- Gold benchmark badge (90+ score required) -->
<img src="https://ucpregistry.com/badge/yourstore.com.svg?type=gold" alt="UCP Gold">

<!-- Fast response badge (sub-200ms required) -->
<img src="https://ucpregistry.com/badge/yourstore.com.svg?type=fast" alt="UCP Fast">

<!-- Agent-ready badge (all 5 bots allowed required) -->
<img src="https://ucpregistry.com/badge/yourstore.com.svg?type=agent" alt="Agent Ready">

Badges update automatically as your status changes.

Embeddable JS Widget

Drop a live status widget onto any page with a single script tag:

<script src="https://ucpregistry.com/widget/yourstore.com.js"></script>

The widget displays your current UCP status, response time, and benchmark score, pulling live data from the Registry.

Collections Placement

High-performing merchants are automatically surfaced in curated Registry collections:

Collections are computed automatically — there's nothing to submit. Improve your score or response time and you'll move up.

Product Discovery Catalog

Your indexed products appear in the Registry's Product Discovery cross-merchant search. When an AI agent searches for a type of product across the ecosystem, your catalog is included. This is the primary channel through which agents discover your inventory before drilling into your UCP endpoint directly.

Public API Access

Your merchant data is available programmatically via the Registry API:

  • Free tier — 30 requests/day per IP, core fields
  • Authenticated tier — 1,000 requests/day with an API key, full data including benchmark breakdown, bot policies, and history

Developers building shopping agents can query the Registry to discover UCP-compliant merchants, filter by capability or platform, and retrieve endpoint details without touching each store directly.

Step 9: Monitor and Improve

After listing, track your performance through your merchant page and benchmark report.

The UCP Score (0–100)

Your UCP Score is a composite measure of implementation quality:

Component Points
Verified status 20
Response time 0–20
Capabilities declared 0–20
Benchmark score 0–20
Uptime (30-day) 0–20

The Benchmark (6-Part Scoring)

The Registry runs a full benchmark against your endpoint, broken into six scored components:

Component What it measures
Speed Time-to-first-byte, response latency under load
Data quality Product data completeness, title and description richness
Capability Breadth of UCP capabilities declared and responding correctly
Manifest Manifest validity, correct version format, field completeness
Agent accessibility AI bot policies — which crawlers you allow vs. block
Gap analysis Missing capabilities relative to your platform's typical offering

Each component is scored independently. Your benchmark grade (A–F) is based on the total. The gold standard collection features merchants scoring 90+.

Use the gap analysis flags in your benchmark report to prioritize which capabilities to add next.

Lessons from Real Agent Sessions

Based on 2,100+ tool calls tracked across 560+ sessions, here are the mistakes that cost merchants the most agent conversions:

  1. Strict type validation — The most common error (23% of product detail failures) is agents passing integer IDs where strings are expected. Accept both types and your error rate drops dramatically
  2. Missing identity handling — 30% of checkout failures are due to missing agent identity tokens. Return clear, actionable error messages (not just 403) so the agent can self-correct
  3. Discount code failures — The worst-performing tool across the ecosystem (71% error rate). If you expose discount tools, validate inputs loosely
  4. Slow search responses — The ecosystem average is 460-980ms, but top performers respond in under 200ms. Agents query multiple stores in parallel, and slow endpoints get fewer completed checkouts
  5. Incomplete search data — Agents that need to make a separate detail call for every product take 2-3x longer to reach checkout. Put the essential data (price, image, availability) in your search response

Stores that address these five issues see their agent success rate jump from the ecosystem average of 58% to over 70%.

Common Questions

Does it cost anything?

Adding a UCP endpoint is free. The UCP Registry listing is free. The protocol is open source.

Will it affect my existing store?

No. UCP adds a new endpoint alongside your existing website. It doesn't change how your store works for regular customers.

Do I need to change my payment provider?

No. UCP works with your existing payment infrastructure. Stripe, PayPal, Adyen — they all work.

How much traffic should I expect from agents?

It varies by vertical and catalog size. Early adopters in popular categories (fashion, beauty, electronics) see meaningful agent-driven discovery traffic within weeks of listing. The overall trend is clear — agentic commerce is growing fast.

Can I control what data agents see?

Yes. Your UCP manifest declares exactly which capabilities and data you expose. You have full control over what's available via UCP, independent of what's on your website.
